#1: IBAN LONGHOUSE HOMESTAY:
Eat & sleep in Iban longhouse & interact with residents. "There is no way I could completely explain the wonderful experience we had at this Longhouse. The people at the Longhouse were fun, we had a great time with them. It was real and genuine. We loved it. We sat and drank rice wine with a number of the people, we shared our scotch with them, we ate with them, and we talked until after 10 at night. It was warm and friendly and genuine." June and Marty New York In the homestay program you will actually stay in the longhouse as the chief's guest! You experience a realistic slice of life in a longhouse and are able to have a lot of interaction with the residents! It's an awesome experience if you are willing to sacrifice physical comfort for comraderie. Access is via an enjoyable 40 minute longboat ride through the jungle. Visits can be one or two nights. (Also available as a day trip from the Batang Ai Resort) You sleep on thin mattresses covered with mosquito netting on the living-room floor of the chief's "apartment". You will join the longhouse residents for meals sitting on the floor! During the day you'll be trekking and exploring the surrounding forest. "Outhouse" with western plumbing is available for our guests.. a small room complete with flush toilet, tiny sink and shower head...but with very little 'turn-around' room. |
#2: IBAN LONGHOUSE VISIT:
Eat & sleep in our guest lodge. Visit an Iban longhouse in evening. "Never met such friendly people before.We loved the place, the Iban, and all the longhouse staff. Facilities were very clean, food was excellent. Had a lot of fun with the guides and the Ibans. Less touristic place than expected." Julie & Alex France In the longhouse visit you travel much deeper into the jungle (it entails an amazing 1.5-2 hour longboat ride through the forest.) You only visit this longhouse after dinner. Your meals and lodging will be in our guest lodge which is still basic but definitely more comfortable than the longhouse. You have a private room, with a thin mattress, fan & mosquito netting, also with western plumbing, but more similar to college dorm-type male/female bathrooms.. During the day you will explore the surrounding forest and enjoy a traditional bamboo chicken BBQ at a scenic waterfall. Due to the distance, this is only available for trips of at least 3days/2nights. One night can be at another longhouse for a homestay experience, or for those who don't want to rough it there is the Batang Ai Resort en route back to the jetty. |

Nowadays, most of the Bidayuh tribes live in single family homes in jungle villages rather than longhouses. These two programs have been arranged with local guides who also are personal friends of Jodi. Both villages are accessible by road approximately a one hour drive from Kuching. There is no river travel required so arrangements can be made for a day trip as well as overnights. Each program is totally customized to your preferences.
